Joseph Zito on Robert Smithson

I was looking at some scatter pieces by Richard [Serra] and Barry [Le Va]. I’m thinking of doing one of my own … But I wouldn’t want to use materials that were readily available … I would need to shape, to form, to control the natural elements that I choose … I’ll cast peat into human-scale blocks. Then I’ll randomly scatter the finished blocks … But the blocks would have to be placed by machine because of their size and weight … And that would be counter to the very idea of a random scatter … Maybe I’ll just skip it.
